World Trade Center slaat zijn vleugels uit

Na een jarenlange strijd staat hij er dan toch: het nieuwe World Trade Center Transportation Hub. Dit vrijstaande gebouw middenin de binnenstad van New York, gelegen aan Ground Zero, verbindt meerdere openbare vervoersstromen en kostte meer dan het World Trade Center zelf.

Stalen vleugels

Het transporthub bestaat uit een ovaalvormig gebouw genaamd de Oculus. Deze constructie is 350 meter lang, 35 meter breed op zijn breedste punt en bijna 30 meter hoog. In dit gebouw kijkt men op naar talloze stalen ribben die het plafond vormen, maar ook doorschieten als uitgeslagen vleugels tot wel 50 meter hoog.


Het 4 miljard dollar kostende gebouw is toegankelijk via de west- en oostkant. Binnenin heeft men toegang tot meerdere metrolijnen, de WTC-torens 2, 3 en 4 maar ook diverse winkels. Laatstgenoemde bevinden zich op het Concours-niveau, een grote hal zonder steunpilaren. Het geheel lijkt volgens architect Santiago Calatrava op een vogel die wordt vrijgelaten vanuit de handen van een kind.

Pilaren van licht

Het knooppunt wordt voorzien van veel daglicht door de glazen onderdelen tussen de stalen ribben. De architect noemt licht zelfs een structureel element in het ontwerp en dat het gebouw ondersteund wordt door ‘pilaren van licht’. In de zomerdagen, en op 11 september, wordt het glazen dak van de Oculus geopend om uitzicht op de lucht te bieden.
